You don't need years of coding experience to build software in 2026. Vibe coding - describing what you want and letting AI build it - has opened software creation to anyone who can think clearly about what they want.

This guide is for complete beginners. No jargon assumptions. No prerequisites beyond curiosity.

Start With One Tool

Don't try five tools at once. Pick one:

  • Replit Agent - Zero setup, works in your browser, deploys automatically. Best for absolute beginners.
  • Cursor - If you want to learn more about how code works while building. Visual IDE with AI help.
  • Claude Code - If you're comfortable with a terminal. Most powerful, steeper learning curve.

My recommendation for beginners: start with Replit Agent. Graduate to Cursor or Claude Code as you learn more.

The One Skill That Matters

Clear communication. If you can describe what you want precisely, AI builds it well. If your descriptions are vague, the output is vague.

Vague: "Make me a website" Clear: "Create a personal portfolio website with three sections: About Me, My Projects (with images), and a Contact Form that sends to my email"

Practice being specific about: what you want to see, how it should behave, and what happens when things go wrong.

Your First Project (30 minutes)

  1. Open Replit and start a new project
  2. Describe: "Create a simple to-do list app where I can add tasks, mark them complete, and delete them. Use a clean, modern design."
  3. Watch it build
  4. Test it - add tasks, complete them, delete them
  5. Ask for changes: "Make the completed tasks gray with a strikethrough"

Congratulations. You just vibe coded.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Accepting everything without looking. Even if you can't read code, look at the result. Does it work? Does it look right?

Going too big too fast. Start with a to-do list, not a social network. Build confidence with small wins.

Not iterating. The first output is rarely perfect. Describe what's wrong and let AI fix it.
